These ancient rafts were documented by Spanish historians in the early 18th century, who compared their sailing abilities to European ships of the time. But very little is actually known about them.
Here is a list of previous raft expeditions:
Kon-Tiki (1947): Thor Heyerdahl sailed from Peru to Polynesia in 101 days, covering 8'000km.
Las Balsas (1973): Vital Alsar sailed from Ecuador to Australia with three rafts in 178 days, covering more than 13'000km. It remains the longest raft expedition.
Tangaroa (2006): Torgeir Higraff and Olav Heyerdahl (grandson of Thor Heyerdahl) sailed from Peru to Polynesai in 73 days, covering 8'000km.
Kon-Tiki2 (2015): Torgeir Higraff sailed Peru to the Easter Islands in 114 days, covering approximately 5'000km.
Our goal with the Leeway-25 Expedition is to create the first-ever detailed documentation of this ancient steering method, known as the guara technique.
